This is not good at all. Yesterday I was talking to a friend about how my wife doesn’t want me riding motorcycles since our son was born (12 years old now), and how much I lust for an Africa Twin. She said that she doesn’t care, if I want one that bad I should go get it.

She doesn’t realize what she has awakened in me with that statement. Last night I kept having dreams of r iding a glorious Honda adventure bike. I was around town, across the country, flying through the desert racing across the dunes in the Dakar rally.

I could go buy one today. Maybe I should sell the 911.

You should go buy one today, before she changes her mind. Personally, if you can afford to own both, I’d keep the 911 too.

It’s not like that. We had one conversation when she was pregnant that a prior incident was really bothering her and she’d rather I not ride anymore while our son was young. I never pushed it or brought it up since aside from when our son said he wanted a dirt bike and she said that was a good idea and I should buy 2 so my boy and I can ride together.

What I should do is go buy a CRF450 and something for the boy.

I like the 2 bike idea, one for you and on e for your boy.

Or if you’re really clever, get 3, one for you, one for him, and one for your wife and get her involved, too. My dad did that with 3 wheelers (this was before I was born) - he wanted one, my mom wasn’t keen on it, so he b ought 2 so she could ride one and she ended up loving it.

If you haven’t been on a bike in a while I wouldn’t start with a Africa Twin, they’re awesome but giant! I’d start with something like a 450 or a KLR and build up your skills.

Something for the kid is also an awesome idea. I was 12 when I got my first motorcycle and while it scared the hell out of me it was awesome and started my lifetime love of 2 wheels.

That’s funny. My wife has no problem with me flying (been at it for 25 years) but the idea of me buying a motorcycle is a non-starter. (I’ve owned a bunch) I have 9 year old twins and something something they need their dad to stick around something...

If you haven’t ridden in a while, consider getting something a bit smaller and cheaper to buy and insure. Africa twins aren’t cheap.... But if you got something like a DRZ 400 you could not only ride on the street, but go off road too. Then get your kid a smaller dirt bike (70 or 90cc) and you can have some fun on trails while you build up skills on the street.

They say dirt riders make the best street riders anyways, so you're just doing it for your own safety!

When we were first married, I was actively hang gliding. I was also talking about her learning SCUBA so we could go diving together. She took the MSF safety course so we could ride together. After that, w e were actively searching for a new motorcycle when a couple of things happened. My wife got pregnant and o ne of my friends was paralyzed in a freak hang gliding accident. That brought all of my risky activities to a screeching halt.

Love mine! Decay and I bought ours around the same time and both found them to be fantastic and so much better than expected. 8k miles on mine and I bought it last July.
